Frequently Asked Questions
How should I get there?
Guests should plan to fly into Benito Juarez Mexico City International Airport (MEX). Ubers are readily available, safe, and affordable throughout the city. We will be arranging private shuttles from the Volga hotel to the wedding venue on Saturday. Guests should plan to Uber or walk to the welcome party venue on Friday.
Can I drink the water?
The tap water in Mexico City is undrinkable for locals and tourists alike. All hotels and wedding events will use filtered and/or bottled water.
Is Mexico City Safe?
Yes - Mexico City is safe. As with any large or international city, exercise common sense and street awareness and you shouldn’t have any issues. We’ve visited several times and never felt unsafe.
How should I get around?
We strongly recommend Uber for getting around. The city is also very walkable and we encourage everyone to walk around to get a better sense of all the city has to offer!
Where should I stay?
We have a hotel block available at Hotel Volga (see the travel page for additional details). The wedding day shuttle will run to and from Volga prior to the ceremony and throughout the night to bring guests back to the hotel. Staying at Volga is not required and we encourage everyone to stay wherever makes sense for you. The city has tons of great hotels you’ll recognize (think Marriott, Hilton, and Hyatts), as well as excellent boutique hotel, and Airbnb options.
When should I arrive?
We suggest that you should plan to arrive by Friday morning at the latest if you’re planning to attend the Welcome Party.
Should I rent a car?
No - driving in Mexico City will be a hassle and bad traffic often makes walking faster. We suggest you Uber or walk everywhere you go.
Can I bring a plus one?
Yes! All guests are welcome to bring a +1 to all events. Please include their information when you RSVP.
Are children allowed?
In general, this will be an adult affair; however, there will be some family kids in attendance. We want this wedding to be as fun and convenient as possible for everyone and know that it isn’t always easy to travel without your kids - so if that’s a deal breaker for you, text us and we’ll figure something out!
What’s the attire for the weekend?
The welcome party will be cocktail attire. Think sports coats and cocktail dresses. The wedding will be formal. Think dark suits/tuxes and formal/long dresses.
What will the weather be like?
November is a great time to be in Mexico City. The days usually hover around 70 degrees and the evenings drop to the low 60s.
Will the wedding take place indoors or out?
The welcome party, ceremony, and reception will all be indoors.
Do I need to bring pesos?
Most places will take credit cards but it’s a good idea to carry some pesos for tips. ATMs are available throughout the city and will accept US debit cards.
Anything else I should know?
Mexico City sits more than 7,000 feet above sea level (2,000 feet higher than Denver) so be prepared for the altitude. If you’re prone to altitude sickness, bring some medication and stay hydrated. If you’re prone to heavy drinking, ease into it and stay hydrated.
What’s the deal with the shendi?
The shendi is our way of celebrating Fezaan’s Pakistani heritage in Austin with all of our friends, family, and extended community. Guests should expect an evening of food, music, and dancing in downtown Austin a few weeks before the wedding. For those of you unable to join us for the wedding in Mexico City, the shendi is a great way for us to celebrate together prior to the wedding.
We suggest South Asian formal/wedding attire in lighter tones, gold, and/or silver, but if your saree or kurta is stuck at the dry cleaners then a suit or dress will work great! This is meant to be a fun and relaxed event so don’t stress too much about the attire.
